Erysipelas

Erysipelas is a bacterial skin infection that primarily affects the upper layers of the skin, typically caused by Streptococcus bacteria (usually Streptococcus pyogenes). It is characterized by a well-defined, red, swollen, and painful area of the skin, often with a raised, distinct border. It usually appears on the face, legs, or arms.

Symptoms:

  • Red, swollen, and shiny skin
  • Pain or tenderness in the affected area
  • Fever and chills
  • Blisters in severe cases
  • Warmth in the infected area

Risk factors:

  • Skin injuries (cuts, surgical wounds, insect bites)
  • Chronic conditions like diabetes or peripheral vascular disease
  • Weak immune system (e.g., due to HIV, cancer treatments)
  • Lymphedema (swelling due to lymphatic system problems)

Treatment:

  • Antibiotics: Usually penicillin or another suitable antibiotic, taken orally or intravenously depending on the severity of the infection.
  • Pain relief: NSAIDs like ibuprofen to reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Hospitalization: In severe cases, especially if the infection spreads rapidly or if the person has underlying health conditions.

If you suspect erysipelas, it's important to see a doctor for diagnosis and treatment. Early intervention with antibiotics usually leads to a good prognosis.
