Lichen planus
On skin, lichen planus often appears as purple, itchy, flat bumps that develop over several weeks. In the mouth and genital mucosa, lichen planus forms lacy white patches, sometimes with painful sores.
Lichen planus is a condition that causes inflammation and irritation in the skin and mucous membranes. It is considered an autoimmune disorder, meaning the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues. It can affect various parts of the body, including the skin, nails, scalp, and mucous membranes (such as the mouth or genital areas).
Common Symptoms:
- Skin Lichen Planus:
- Purplish, flat-topped, itchy bumps or patches.
- Typically found on the wrists, lower back, and ankles, but can appear anywhere on the body.
- Oral Lichen Planus:
- White, lacy patches or painful sores inside the mouth.
- Can cause discomfort, especially when eating or drinking.
- Nail Lichen Planus:
- Thinning or ridging of the nails, and in severe cases, nail loss.
- Genital Lichen Planus:
- Painful sores or ulcers in the genital region.
Causes:
- The exact cause isn't fully understood, but it's believed to be related to an immune system malfunction where the body attacks its own skin cells.
- There may also be genetic factors or triggers like infections, medications, or stress that can contribute to the condition.
Treatment:
There is no cure for lichen planus, but treatment focuses on controlling symptoms. Common treatments include:
- Topical Steroids: To reduce inflammation and itching.
- Oral Steroids: For more severe cases or when the condition affects large areas.
- Other Medications: Like immunosuppressants or antihistamines for itching.
- Light Therapy: Sometimes UV light treatment is used for stubborn cases of skin lichen planus.
Prognosis:
- Most cases of lichen planus improve over time, but flare-ups can occur.
- Oral lichen planus may persist for a longer period and requires ongoing management.
- The condition is not contagious.
If you suspect you have lichen planus, it's important to see a dermatologist or healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and management.
